Outdoor concerts EBBC2018 - ZIMIHC

As added extra to the official timetable, you can also treat yourself to one of the many outdoor concerts taking place throughout the city. Enjoy concerts at the Stadhuisbrug or relax at one of the canal side terraces and admire the bands on the boats that sail by.

Start EYBB -

36 young brass band players aged 18-21 from 16 European countries meet for a whole week with the purpose of making music together on a very high musical level. They will come together from 28th April till 6th May for rehearsals and concerts under the baton of the distinguished conductor Ivan Meylemans.

Utrecht Brass Conference - ZIMIHC

To get you in the mood for the European Brass Band Championships, ZIMIHC will be organizing the Utrecht Brass Conference. Musicians, conductors, composers, (semi-)professionals and other brass lovers can enjoy inspiring lectures, informative workshops by Yamaha-artists Rik Mol and Dave Kutz and interesting meetings. The conference will be in Dutch.

Utrecht Brass try-out concert Brassband De Wâldsang - ZIMIHC

Dutch national champion brass band De Wâldsang is currently preparing for the European Brass Band Championship. The group will play a try-out concert during the Utrecht Bass Weekend in preparation for the European Brass Band Championship. Before the break, local brass band Amersfoort will also perform.

Utrecht Brass try-out concert Brassband Willebroek - ZIMIHC

Two of the best brass bands of the Benelux will perform at this try-out concert. The veteran group Brass Band Schoonhoven will share the stage with Belgium national champions Brass Band Willebroek. Grab your chance to see these bands perform in the intimate setting of ZIMIHC theatre Zuilen.

1st Round Solo Competition -

Come and enjoy the short solo concerts from twenty very talented young brass players and percussionists from all over Europe. Final Soloist Competition - EBBC2018

The top three European brass players and percussionists will perform at an exciting solo concert accompanied by Brass Band Schoonhoven from the Netherlands. It will remain a surprise as to which artists and instruments will be featured until after the qualifying rounds on 2nd May. What is certain is that this concert will be an evening full of extraordinary talented young musicians with a bright future. The evening will also feature performances by Brass Band Schoonhoven conducted by Russell Gray and the European Youth Brass Band conducted by Ivan Meylemans.

Championship Section – Set Test Piece -

The twelve best brass bands of Europe will be competing for the prestigious title of European champion. The competition starts with performing the set test piece Time for Outrage! by composer Marco Pütz from Luxembourg. In this piece, Pütz expresses his personal disgust of the current crises in the world. Not that he has the illusion that his music will offer relief but at least it shows a general outrage. Prior to this concert there will be a two-minute silence conducted by the National Commemoration ceremony.

Challenge Section - Championship Section Own Choices

The second day of the European Brass Band Championships starts with the five orchestras of the Challenge Section. They will perform a short programme consisting of the set test piece and fifteen minutes of music of their own choice. The set test piece is a new composition by the young Dutch composer Hendrik de Boer. At 12 o'clock it is time for the highlight of the competition: the own choice pieces of the twelve bands of the Championship Section. All bands will provide a business card with virtuous passages, lyrical soloists and challenging compositions. Musical fireworks guaranteed!

Gala Concert -

The spectacular Gala Concert will be the icing on the cake of the EBBC2018. ‘Brass Band’ as a phenomenon will be in the spotlight in this dazzling concert by Eikanger-Bjørsvik Musikklag (European Champion 2017), the European Youth Brass Band and special guests Capella de la Torre and K.O. Brass. Travel through time from Capella de la Torres Renaissance music on historical wind instruments to the in-your-face unique blend of sound of the ‘not that average’ brass quintet K.O. Brass. A gala concert that will blow you away!

European Youth Brass Band Championships -

Nine excellent youth brass bands from all over Europe will try to outmarch each other on the stage of Tivoli Vredenburgs Great Hall. They all play their own selection of compositions in which at least one of the two set test pieces is included. It will be a day full of varied and inspiring concerts performed by very enthusiastic and talented youngsters. The day will close with a farewell concert by the European Youth Brass Band conducted by Ivan Meylemans.

Participants European Soloist Competition

42 young talented musicians from all over Europe applied by video audition for the European Soloist Competition. The jury selected 20 players who are invited to the first and second round on May 1 and May 2 in Utrecht. After these rounds, three players will be selected for the final to be held in Utrecht on May 3 in the Herz hall in TivoliVredenburg.

Soloist Competition EBBC2018 (Hapé Smeele)

At the EBBC2018 a total of 26 bands will enter the stage in TivoliVredenburg. The strong line up promises an exciting and fantastic contest.

In the Championship Section reigning champion Eikanger-Bjørsvik Musikklag will defend its title, Brass Band Fröschl Hall from Austria is making its debut and home band De Wâldsang will make its 20th appearance at the EBBC.
The Challenge Section will see five bands taking part. Italian Brass Band will defend its title and will compete along with bands from Germany, Sweden, Lithuania and Northern Ireland.
The Youth Brass Band Contest will see four bands in the Development Section and five in the Premier Section. Three bands are entering for the first time; Tasta Skolekorps from Norway, Catch Bassin Brass Band from Austria and Seindorf Beaumaris Youth Brass Band from Wales will make their debuts in the contest.

The Music Commission of the European Brass Band Championship [MC] has been informed by ZIMIHC, the local organisers of next year’s European Brass Band Championships in Utrecht, that Harrie Janssen, who was commissioned by ZIMIHC to compose the set test piece, is not able to complete his work.

The EBBA Music Commission has chosen two British works as the set tests for the European Youth Brass Band Championships. Bands in the Development Section will include Philip Sparke’s Valerius Variations in their programmes. Premier Section bands will tackle Michael Ball’s colourful Chaucer’s Tunes.

Ivan Meylemans to conduct EYBB

Ivan Meylemans is confirmed as the conductor of the 2018 European Youth Brass Band (EYBB). Meylemans was invited to lead the EYBB because of his wealth of experience from working with symphony orchestras, symphonic wind bands as well as brass bands. The EYBB consists of 35 talented musicians between 18 and 21 from all over Europe and is part of the activities around the European Brass Band Championships.

Ben jij die talentvolle muzikant die Nederland vertegenwoordigt in de European Youth Brass Band 2018? In het kader van de European Brass Band Championships wordt er een European Youth Brass Band samengesteld uit jonge Europese muzikanten. Ben je tussen 18 en 22 jaar (geboren na 1 juni 1996 en voor 1 april 2000) en heb je minimaal je C-diploma of gelijkwaardig niveau en wil je graag deel uit maken van deze jeugdbrassband meld je dan snel aan!

European Soloist Competition 2018

Young soloists who originate from or who are resident in European Brass Band Association member countries are invited to compete in the 8th European Soloist Competition for Brass and Percussion Instruments. The European Brass Band Association (EBBA) organises the competition as part of the 41th European Brass Band Championships 2018 in Utrecht. The competition will be held 1st to 3rd May 2018.

Fringe Programme

To celebrate EBBC2018, Utrecht Brass has created a unique fringe programme for young and old.

Picture free open air concerts in unique locations throughout the city, like parks, squares and canals. Attend an indoor concert in some of the most beautiful and acoustic churches in Utrecht, or one of our pop-up concerts that will be taking place during the week. Wherever you are, be sure to keep an eye on our events between 28th April and 6th May.
