The European Brass Band Association (EBBA) and ZIMIHC, the Utrecht based platform for amateur arts and local organiser of the 2018 European Brass Band Championships, are delighted to announced that Ivan Meylemans is confirmed as the conductor of the 2018 European Youth Brass Band (EYBB). Meylemans was invited to lead the EYBB because of his wealth of experience from working with symphony orchestras, symphonic wind bands as well as brass bands. The EYBB is part of the activities around the European Brass Band Championships which will be held at Utrecht from 28 April till 6 May 2018.
Commenting on his appointment, EBBA President Ulf Rosenberg said: “Meylemans is a well-known figure in European banding and possesses exactly the right charismatic and inspiring personality to enthuse the young talented musicians of the EYBB. We are all looking forward very much to hearing EYBB 2018 under his leadership.”
European Youth Brass Band
The European Youth Brass Band consists of 35 talented people between 18 and 21. These passionate young brass band musicians from all over Europe will be brought together for a whole week, starting the 28th of April 2018. EYBB will give a number of concert appearances during the following week: a public concert in Utrecht (2 May), the final of the European Soloist Competition (3 May), the official Opening Ceremony of the European Brass Band Championships (4 May), a performance at the outdoor Liberation Festival Utrecht (5 May), Gala Concert (5 May) and the final Farewell Concert on Sunday the 6th of May.
Belgian (but Netherlands based) conductor Ivan Meylemans is one of the most exciting and dynamic conductors to emerge in Europe recent years. Ivan is currently chief conductor of the Zeeland Orchestra in Middelburg (Netherlands), Brass Band Schoonhoven (Netherlands), symphonic wind band St. Michaël of Thorn (Netherlands), fanfare band Kempenbloei from Achel (Belgium). He also works as Professor Orchestral Conducting and as conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of one of the finest conservatory’s in Belgium: LUCA School of Arts, based in Leuven. As a guest conductor Ivan Meylemans has worked with major symphony orchestras in Europe and until last year he served as assistant of maestro Mariss Jansons at the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam. Conductor Bernard Haitink said about Meylemans: “I was impressed by his technical ability, his powers of communication to the orchestra, his natural authority and the clarity of his musical ideas.” This summer, Ivan Meylemans also was conductor of the WASBE2017 honour band, an initiative by ZIMIHC to involve local wind musicians in the WASBE2017 International Conference in Utrecht.
