Meet the band: Tasta skolekorps

Tasta skolekorps (Tasta School Brass Band) is located in Stavanger, Norway. The city of Stavanger is considered to be the capital of the Norwegian oil industry. Tasta skolekorps (Tasta School Brass Band) was founded in 1950 and has been of great importance to the local community and to the city. The band is now one of the largest and best regarded school bands in the country.

The bands players are recruited from three local primary schools and the band currently has 110 members. Tasta skolekorps (Tasta School Brass Band) is split up into four individual bands with players at different age levels: The Junior Band (8-9 years old), The Intermediate Band (9-10 years old), The Youth Band (10-12 years old) and The Senior Band (12-19 years old). It is The Senior Band that will be representing Tasta skolekorps (Tasta School Brass Band) at the European Youth Brass Band Championships 2018.

Our goal is to remain one of the highest rated school brass bands in Norway. We aim to achieve this by combining a good social environment in the band with high quality musical education in cooperation with the City’s cultural school. The band has a high level of activity and the band’s members take part in local, regional and national championships. The band’s conductor through the last 31 years has been Morten Øvrebekk. Morten plays an important role throughout the work of the band, providing necessary continuity and a high level of musical tutition.

Tasta skolekorps (Tasta School Brass Band) has won the 1st division for school brass bands in Norway 12 times. The band participated in the European Youth Brass Band Championships in 1989 and1998.
